Implementing your SEO Strategy

14.01.2013

Creating and maintaining a solid web presence is more than simply designing and developing a website, filling it with content and then simply leaving it to its own devices. In order to entice both recurring and new visitors to your website, a suitable marketing strategy must be adopted.

A good website needs both good design and good SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). SEO enables you to rank of the top of search engines, inviting potential customers into your website and increasing leads and sales. However, in order to decipher the best strategy for your business, you must first understand your online business objectives. Do you want to gather sales, leads, or simply increase your web presence? Do you have a particular product or service that you wish to promote as your primary focus? Once you have your targets in mind, you can begin planning your SEO strategy.

Without the implementation of at least a minimal SEO strategy then you will be severely limiting your web presence and your potential for attracting new customers. An SEO strategy can be as vast or as straightforward as you require and is a predominantly free marketing strategy for your website; however, it is an investment of your time and careful research.

Zheta International’s SEO team offer the following advice for those who wish to kick-start their SEO campaign:

Keyword Research

What key words and phrases do your clients use to locate you on the web and in social media? Are you displaying in search results pages when you type in these important search queries? Do you have the required keyword density (between 2% and 7%) in your website’s content?

Search engine optimization requires that you not only choose the right keywords and phrases but that you also create engaging copy that your website visitors will find useful. Make sure that your optimization efforts not result only in pages filled with keywords, but rather that you use those keywords to give valuable and relevant information. Your website content needs to attract users and search engines by providing compelling, natural content that is informative and engaging whilst also highlighting the key words of your business.

Know your Competitors

In any business environment it is vital to know who your competitors are as well as their strengths and weaknesses. In the real world, businesses analyse each other’s market strengths and weaknesses, and set objectives accordingly. On the web, it is important to know who is ranking above you in search engine results pages, so that you can adjust your SEO strategies accordingly.

Update Regularly

A website that is regularly updated is very valuable in terms of SEO, as search engine spiders regularly crawl the web and index any new content that is discovered. Updating your website at regular intervals (such as every fortnight or every month) guarantees that search engines and your regular visitors will always be presented with fresh and engaging content. A website that is maintained regularly will generally rank higher than a website that has remained static for a number of months.

You can keep your website up to date by writing or sourcing regular news articles, writing a blog or updating with new products offers and special promotions. If you have a lot of new content to insert in your website, do not insert all at one go; instead spread out your updates over a few days or weeks.

Provide Relevant (and Informative) Content

Content is the backbone of any SEO strategy, but it is only high-quality content that will generate positive results. Your content should be comprehensive, informative, and should always be relevant to your website and the services/products you provide.  The more information you can provide to the user, the more quality content you are providing the search engines too. Search engines can penalise websites that use duplicate content, irrelevant content or spam, so creating high quality and unique content is imperative for maintaining your web presence.

Create a Solid Social Media Presence

We are continually accessing social media, and a vast percentage of new content is found on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. You can use social media to expand your audience, whilst providing a new level of business to consumer relationships. Creating a social media business profile is quick and easy, and provides another avenue for you to include your website links and optimised web content.

Social media is often a more familiar environment for both the client and the consumer; the client can easily add, share and promote content and the consumer can find exactly what he/she is searching for. Social media allows businesses and consumers to connect and engage, whilst forming relationships and narrowing the gaps presented by the often unfamiliar world wide web.

Search engine optimisation is a gradual process, and never guarantees instant results, but keep your objectives in mind and continue to implement successful SEO techniques, and you will see your website prosper. For those who wish for more substantial and rapid results there are numerous methods of online marketing that you can utilise, perhaps to give your SEO strategy a helping hand in its initial few months.
